Heating and hot water - Boilers

Boilers account for around 60% of all domestic carbon dioxide emissions. By fitting a new high efficiency condensing boiler with heating controls, you will significantly cut your home's CO2 emissions and could save around £200 a year.

How to save Energy and Money

wpf2f551d5.png

Buying energy efficient appliances

Could save you up to £130 per year.

Loft Insulation

Installing cavity wall insulation will save you £130 - £160 per year.

A properly insulated loft will save you £70 per year.

Energy efficient light bulbs last 10 - 12 times longer than traditional bulbs, saving £9 per bulb per annum. That’s a cool £100 during their whole lifetime. An average sized house could save £135 per year.

What if I walked to school, or the shop for the paper ?

Based on 190 Days of School in the UK per year.

Being driven to school produces approximately 1.1 lb of Carbon dioxide per mile travelled ( depending on your car ).

What does it cost the earth ?

A return trip of 1 mile each way, would produce  per year ( for one young person per car ).

-  209 lb of Carbon dioxide (2mile p/day )

If you walked or cycled to school, you would produce approximately.

-  7.6 lb of Carbon dioxide (2mile p/day )

So, provided it is safe and convenient to walk or cycle to school, you could be reducing your carbon footprint by over 200lb of C02 per year.  You would have to walk/cycle to school for 27½ years to produce the same amount of carbon dioxide, as you do in a car for 1 year, driving a two mile round trip per day.

You would be healthier and fitter

Carbon Good Guys

too !

What savings would I make ?

£50-70 per year on fuel per 1 mile e/way

How many trees to convert my C02 ?

83 trees a year to convert your Carbon dioxide back to Oxygen for the 1 mile to school taken by car.

Only 2.5 trees a year to convert your Carbon dioxide back to Oxygen for walking or cycling to school.

Calculation based on 25 year old forest: 1,760 lbs of CO2 per acre per year / 700 trees =
average of 2.52 lbs of CO2 per tree per year (rounded to 3 lbs)

Leaving unnecessary items on standby is said to costs each household an average of £37 a year.

If chargers for devices such as mobile phones and MP3 players were unplugged when not in use, the UK could save enough electricity each year to power 115,000 homes.

Chargers are not huge energy consumers in their own right, but across the UK those left plugged in unnecessarily waste over £60m and are responsible for a quarter of a million tonnes of carbon dioxide every year.

UK households spend £1.9bn on electricity every year for lighting.

If all UK households replaced one light bulb with an energy efficient one, the money saved could pay about 75,000 family fuel bills a year.

Washing clothes at 30C as opposed to 40C, uses 40% less energy and is generally as efficient.

Modern powders are designed to be more effective at lower temperatures.

Turning the thermostat down by 1C can cut more than 10% from the average central heating bill.

Check that your water isn't too hot. The cylinder thermostat should not need to be set higher than 60°C/140°F.

Regain that healthy body.

According to government figures, there has been a decline of 20 per cent in the number of miles walked since the 1980s.

Walking improves the condition of your heart and lungs and works the muscles of the lower body.

Energy saving is of major importance here in the United Kingdom as it is in all other countries. The government here needs individual energy consumption habits to change, so that enough is available for all in the future. Using it wisely is sensible, and requires a cultural change of habit similar to some of our European neighbours. The energy companies however, can not expect the consumer to swallow a hike in energy prices  to compensate for the immediate loss in revenue to themselves, as consumers put these energy saving tips to good use. The perceived benefit needs to exist and not be snatched back by greedy companies.

Build value into your home

Building in new energy production methods to heat and power your home.

Ground source heat pumps - waste less energy and save money.

Drawing heat from the earth –a system that turns 1 unit of energy into 4!

The temperature of the earth a few metres below our feet is constant all year round?

How it works
Ground source heat pumps transfer this heat into your house to provide space heating or pre-heat your hot water.

You can meet 100% of your space heating requirements this way. They need electricity to pump the heat, but for every unit of electricity they use they usually produce 3 to 4 units of heat. So you can save a lot of energy.

Home wind Turbine & Solar panels

Grants are already available to cover up to 30 per cent of the cost of small-scale wind renewable systems such as a wind turbine or solar panels. The cost of this technology is still fairly expensive, but should come down as time goes on, as with most new technologies.

One family in Edinburgh, Scotland, for example spent £4000 on solar panels, including a £1,300 home renewables grant. They estimate the panels have saved them £140 per year.

Since 2003 the Energy Saving Trust has awarded more than 3,500 grants to householders in Scotland alone. Scottish households have invested more than £19.5 million in renewable technologies in this time, but the government wants more people to install the technology.

Investing in a wind turbine rather than a new en suite bathroom or kitchen may be the way to add new value to our homes.

Adding real value

Changing the way we use and value energy, is the only way forward. For many, it will also be a time to provide some measure of independence, at a time of uncertainty for the future of energy markets.

wpf06da03d_0f.jpg

In a country still obsessed with adding value to their homes, installing wind turbines and solar panels, may well be worth considering, as it now seems that buyers may be prepared to pay more for a home fitted with these new technologies.
